Tar Heel Group Training Free Week
January 12-16 at the Student Recreation Center – Pre-registration needed
    Tar Heel Group Training is an inclusive small group training program designed to give participants 1 on 1 attention while giving them a sense of community. Our program is designed to enhance fitness through strength, power, and aerobic training as well as improving joint mobility. Our goal is to provide participants of all fitness levels with an intention, progressively linear, and interactive training program!

Newbie Night at Rams Head Climbing Wall

A Friday night festival of Campus Rec activities. Come and get a taste of  Rock Climbing, Crate Stacking, The Flying Squirrel, Aerial Silks and Slacklining.

App Skiing and Snowboarding trip on January 24
Registration is open now!

Join us for a day trip to Appalachian Ski Mountain! Located near Boone, NC, App is a great local hill for both beginner and intermediate skiers and snowboarders, with an extensive freestyle terrain park in addition to its downhill trails. Our student instructors will drive you up to the mountain early in the morning, handle ticket and rental pickup, then allow you to ski and snowboard freely until we meet up to return to campus, utilizing the full 8-hour lift ticket included when you purchase this trip. If you’ve never skied or snowboarded before, you can add a peer-to-peer lesson with one of our student instructors, who will work with you in an individual and small-group setting to get you comfortable skiing green (beginner) trails. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks will be provided throughout the day. We’ll likely stop for hot food on the road on the way back, but we’ll provide a complimentary dinner option as well.

Wintergreen Skiing and Snowboarding Trip on January 25

Located in the Blue Ridge mountains west of Charlottesville, VA, Wintergreen is a great regional hill for all skill and experience levels, with great views and an extensive trail system to explore. Fitness 101: Learn about strength training, exercising in the rec centers, and more! 
January 27 – 7-9pm at Rams Head Rec Center – no registration needed

Fitness 101 is a two-hour, drop-in educational event designed to make fitness and our Campus Rec facilities (weight rooms) feel more accessible and less intimidating, especially for students who are new to strength training. Certified Personal Trainers will be present throughout the space demonstrating exercises, answering questions, and helping participants feel more confident navigating the gym.

During the event, participants will be able to:

  • Learn proper form for common strength training exercises
  • Explore different exercise modalities (free weights, machines, cables, bands, etc.)
  • Ask questions about exercise, gym equipment, and Campus Rec offerings
  • Pick up a handout summarizing key concepts and programs available through Campus Recreation
ACE Group Fitness Instructor Training Course
Registration Open: January 7 – 22

The ACE Group Fitness Instructor Training Program follows the guidelines in the ACE (American Council on Exercise) Group Fitness Instructor Manual to prepare participants to take the test and become a certified instructor. Participants will receive education on exercise instruction fundamentals including physiology, biomechanics, class planning, and the skill of teaching. Hands on training will focus on the foundational principles of music, choreography, and cueing for strength and movement based formats. Opportunities will be provided to attend classes and work with a current instructor for additional mentorship & practice outside of class time.

NASM Personal Trainer Training Course
Registration Open: January 7 – 22

The NASM Personal Training course is designed for people who aspire to take the National Academy of Sport Medicine (NASM) Personal Trainer Certification exam and become an effective fitness professional. This 10-week program will have a blended learning approach, and will include a combination of online self-study and in-person practical skills training. The information covered will help students learn how to facilitate rapport and behavior change in clients, as well as design individualized programs based on each client’s unique health, fitness and performance goals. This program includes:

Court Strength: Small Group Training for Racquet Sports
Registration Open: January 7 – 24

This program provides an introduction to strength and conditioning training with a specific focus on racket sports, to optimize your performance on court. Developing the traditional strength-training exercises, plyometrics for explosiveness, and mobility for injury prevention. Incorporating single-leg and single-arm movements to address any muscle imbalances, and rotational movements to mimic a racquet swing. This course is suitable for participants of all fitness levels and racket-sports backgrounds.  This program will run from January 29th – March 12th on Tuesday’s and Thursdays from 8:00pm – 9:00pm. Sessions will be held in SRC A.

Foundational Strength Training for Life
Registration Open: January 7 – 24

This program will utilize fundamental bodyweight and free weight movement patterns to build real strength and mobility throughout the entire body. This will create an excellent foundation for further strength training, calisthenics skills, and other fitness endeavors. This course can help those of all levels. If you have been lifting for years and still feel yourself lacking in the fundamentals (pull-ups, dips, etc.) this is the course for you! If you’re worried about weak joints or lacking mobility, this is the course for you! If you want to try interesting new movements applied in fun and unique ways, this is the course for you! We hope to see you in class! This program will run from January 31st – March 14th on Saturday’s and Sunday’s from 3:00pm – 4:00pm and is suitable for all fitness levels. Sessions will be held in SRC A.

Climbing Wall Membership & Classes

Housing two climbing walls, Campus Rec offers around 5,000 square feet of climbing as well as a bouldering wall and cave. With highly trained climbing staff, the walls are safe and easy to access, even for those who have never climbed before.
