Wilderness First Aid

Join us for a two-day weekend (min. of 16 contact hours) of intense hands-on learning, practice, scenarios, and fun. This course will teach you to care for yourself and others in a wilderness or remote environment, mainly using items that you have with you or from a first aid kit. The activities and skills are appropriate for recreational or professional response where EMS is more than an hour away. Plan for each day to last from 9 AM – 5 PM.

Learn about topics such as scene and patient assessment, trauma stabilization, chest trauma, tourniquets, shock, heart attack, burns, abdominal illnesses, lightning, altitude illnesses, submersion incidents, carrying and lifting individuals who have possible spinal injury, applying a cervical collar and/ or improvising a C-collar, heat and cold related illness, evaluating bone / joint injuries, and evacuation priorities for life threatening emergencies. Come prepared and you’ll be prepared!

The purpose of the course is to provide YOU with a foundation of skills in order to respond to emergencies and give care in areas that do not have immediate emergency medical services. This includes wilderness and remote environments such as urban disasters and wilderness injuries. Please be prepared for a classroom environment that will be in the outdoors. Weather and class size may require that we spend some time inside.

This is an official Red Cross training and is comparable with other Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certifications across the outdoor industry. Because the Wilderness and Remote First Aid” course builds on previous knowledge it is required that you already have a current CPR and AED certification previous to this course. This is a certification course and you must demonstrate the skills and pass a written test in order to get the certification. Please reach out to Daniel Linares (dlinares@unc.edu) for more information.
