David was born and raised on a cattle ranch in Arizona where he grew up training horses, raising cattle and competing in rodeos around the country. In 1993 David joined the Army and served for three years training horses and performing full honor funeral ceremonies with the Caisson platoon at Arlington National Cemetery. Returning to run the family ranch for several years after his military service proved to be an obstacle in his lifelong pursuit of adventurous outdoor activities, therefore in 2003 he enrolled at Oklahoma State University where he earned a M.S. Degree in Recreation Administration with an emphasis in Experiential Education and Adventure Programming. In 2008 David accepted the position of director of outdoor education for UNC-Chapel Hill where he and his dog Zip can be found working with UNC students, staff, faculty and other groups on the Carolina Outdoor Education Center Challenge Course.
