Mt. Rogers Backpacking
Don’t miss this opportunity to escape the all of the distractions of college life. Iimmerse yourself in the sub-alpine landscape of the Mount Rogers Area. Grassy windswept balds, punctuated by spiny rock ridges, contrast with the misty, mossy spruce- fir forested summit of Mount Rogers. At 5,729 feet, it is the highest point in Virginia and includes portions of the Appalachian Trail! You and your group will function as a self-reliant community. Instructors will teach you the skills to succeed and give you leadership opportunities along the way. Nightly debriefs, solo time and evening conversations will encourage you to reflect on your experience in the wilderness. Mt. Rogers proves to be one of our highlights year over year, typically this trip fills every time we run it. If you sign up for this trip, you should be able to leave by 4pm the day the trip begins. If you have classes or obligations past 4 pm please contact the program manager before signging up for this trip.
All you need is the appropriate clothing (and we have some loaners if you need help with that). Food, transportation, and equipment is all provided with the registration. This trip is suitable for beginners and 1st time campers although we will plan to backpack to a different camp site every night. Mt. Rogers is truly one of the gems of the southeast with its grassy balds, boulders, and wild ponies!
Activity Level: Moderate – Strenuous
A mandatory pre-trip meeting for multi-day and full day trips will take place at 7pm at the Carolina Outdoor Education Center on the Monday prior to the trip.
