Kayaking at Black River
Paddle and search for Methuselah, the oldest tree east of the Mississippi, dating back 2,600 years (currently the 5th oldest continuously living tree in the world)! The exact location of the tree is a well kept secret among researchers, however we will travel through the 3 Sisters Swamp where the old growth Cypress live in hopes of finding the strands of older trees. This trip will be a full day and it is recommended that you have some experience paddling kayaks as we will have a minimum of 10 miles to complete our journey. The Black River is beautiful and wild and is one of the treasured waterways of NC. Due to increased driving time compared to our other paddling trips, we will leave from UNC at 6 AM and expect to return early evening. See an article published in Our State magazine about the Black River.
