To participate in Campus Recreation activities, programs, and facilities, UNC Employees may purchase Recreation Membership through the UNC One Card Office.

One Week Trial Membership
Now is the perfect time to get back to a healthy lifestyle. Campus Recreation would like to extend an invitation to participate in a FREE One (1) Week Trial Membership. Click here to take advantage of the trial membership. The one-week trial membership is only available to permanent employees of the University; it is not available to family members or UNC hospital employees.

Kids ROCK!  Recreational Opportunities for Carolina Kids

This program offers Carolina students, faculty and staff the chance to play and exercise with their children and uncover a variety of fun, healthy activities for Carolina kids to enjoy.  Kids ROCK! is also a FREE program thanks to the generosity of our staff and sponsors, that aids in the fight against a national rise in juvenile obesity and diabetes. We do ask that you please RSVP at least two days before an event, so we can be sure to have enough treats!  Please RSVP to the program coordinator, Meghann Martinez, meghannm@email.unc.edu

Employee Intramural Sports Leagues

If you are looking for camaraderie, athletic activity and friendly competition, then get involved in the Employee Intramural League. The program offers a variety of team and individual sports, including tennis, volleyball and more! Registration is available at the Intramural Sports website.

Walk for Wellness
A 10-week self-monitored walking program geared toward providing the opportunity to improve health through physical activity. Complete the program on your own or with a partner. Grand Prize for completion is a gift certificate to a local restaurant! If you are interested in joining this program, please contact Ashley.


Fall Into Fitness
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Show your support by participating in this 6-week, self-monitored physical activity program, which challenges you to get moving to maintain your current body weight. Registration fee is $10. Successful completion of the program gives you the opportunity to get your money back or donate to Get REAL & HEEL! Get Moving! If you are interested in joining this program, please contact Ashley.

Maintain Don’t Gain: Eat Smart, Move More

Fantastic interactive workshops to educate and motivate you to a healthier and happier you!

Wednesday, September 23, 2009: Resist-a-ball
Try one of today's most versatile pieces of exercise equipment…the stability ball. The stability ball can be adapted for many uses, including developing core strength, improving posture and facilitating stretching. Learn exercises that focus on the muscles of the core—the abdomen, chest and back! RSVP by September 21, 2009.

Tuesday October 6, 2009: Stretching 101
Stretching helps keep your muscles flexible, prevent injuries, and makes you feel good. Learn how to stretch specific muscle groups and proper stretching techniques. RSVP by October 3, 2009.

Monday, October 19, 2009: Muscle Tension Release
Suffer from chronic pain and stiffness? Self-myofascial release works to break up the adhesions between your muscle and fascia layers to relieve tension. Come learn how to use a foam roller to work out your kinks and walk with greater ease. RSVP by October 17, 2009.

Friday, November 13, 2009: Healthy Back
Back injuries are caused by stresses placed on the spine. Balanced posture while sitting, standing, sleeping, and during exercise can help to prevent injuries and help keep your back healthy. Join us to learn proper and effective techniques to strengthen the core of your body. RSVP by November 11, 2009.

Can’t make it to the event on the scheduled day, but really want the valuable tools discussed? Fill out the program request form and we will hold a private workshop for you and your fellow colleagues.

The following are in office workshops (we come to you)

Office Energizers: In this session, participants will learn specific exercises that can be done in their offices for complete body toning.

Jump Start your Fitness Program: Looking for a way to get started on your fitness program or add new exercises to an existing one? Join us to hear strategies for lifelong fitness with topics including aerobic fitness, strength training, flexibility and demonstrations of some simple exercises.

Walk your Way to Wellness: This presentation will cover basic walking techniques, conditioning exercises, proper footwear and pedometer basics. We will also go over walking group opportunities and end with a 15 minute group walk around campus. Comfortable shoes are recommended.

Stress Management: Feeling overwhelmed? This workshop will discuss techniques to cope, relieve, and manage stress. Learn to live stress free!

Rams Head Recreation Center
This state-of-the-art facility features:

  • 3 basketball courts
  • Indoor track
  • Indoor climbing wall
  • Locker rooms

  • Cardiovascular and weight training equipment

Student Recreation Center (SRC)
Located at the corner of South Road and Stadium Drive, the SRC provides UNC students and employees with cardiovascular and weight training equipment and group fitness classes.

Fitness Orientations
A Fitness Orientation is a FREE service that provides patrons with a brief introduction to the cardiovascular and weight training equipment available at the Rams Head or Student Recreation Center.

Additional Recreation

Free play opportunities offer a great way to stay in shape, relieve job-related stress and socialize with new and old friends.

  • Lap Swimming is available in the Bowman Gray Indoor Pool. (This is the only facility available to dependents.)
  • Racquet sports (6 squash courts, 15 racquetball courts, and 11 tennis courts)
  • Indoor Climbing (2 climbing walls with belay classes for first-time users)
  • Kerr Lake (230 acres of rustic lake front property ideal for fishing, boating and primitive camping)

Specialty Programs

Employee Group Exercise
A variety of fitness classes are offered during the workday (early morning, lunch hour and evening) to meet the needs of UNC-Chapel Hill employees. Faculty/staff are welcome to participate in ALL classes offered.

Intramural Sports Leagues
Faculty and staff members looking for camaraderie, fun and athletic activity have many opportunities available to them through Intramural Sports. The program offers a variety of team and individual sports. For additional questions, please contact the Intramural Director, 919.843.4769.

Expedition & Challenge Course Program
Outdoor Education Center offers team building low and high challenge course programs for departmental groups and organizations. Outdoor adventure is an effective, fun and unique way to develop a sense of unity within your office or department. We can design a program to address your group’s specific needs and goals; the shared experience of an expedition can transform a new group into a strong network of supportive teammates or strengthen an existing group.
