Marty was born in the Bronx, NY, and moved to Queens for 1st grade. To this day, he attends an annual reunion with 14 other friends who all go back to 1st grade at PS 138 in Queens, NY. Marty received his B.S. Degree from SUNY at Binghamton and M.S. Degree from Michigan State in 1974. Professional experience includes two years at Emory University, one year at Texas A&M, and five years at Cortland College in upstate NY. This is Marty’s 27th year at Carolina (20th year as Director of Campus Recreation). He lives by the creed that life is too short, so cherish every moment you can, stop to smell the roses, and tell your family that you love them...often.

Lauren has been the Associate Director for Campus Recreation / Director of Fitness at UNC-Chapel Hill since 1995. Lauren received a B.S. Degree in Health Management & Business Administration from the University of Arizona and a M.S. Degree in Health Promotion & Exercise Science at Bowling Green State University. During graduate school, Lauren worked as a graduate assistant in Campus Recreation.
Lauren continued gaining experience by working in Campus Recreation, specifically with fitness/wellness and student staff development at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio.
At work, Lauren spends most of her time establishing and maintaining fitness programs and facilities, as well as, developing campus partnerships and collaboration with Campus Health, Department of Exercise and Sport Science, Human Resources/Training & Development and employee wellness. Lauren and her husband, Mike, have three sons (Nick, Tony and Joey). She is an avid sports spectator/fan and enjoys teaching/participating in a variety of group fitness classes and believes "with a positive attitude anything is possible!"

Jason is originally from the mountains of North Carolina, but spent much of his youth in Mount Pleasant, SC. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1996 with a B.A. in English, and completed a Master's Degree in Sport Management from Appalachian State University in 2002. Upon graduation, Jason moved to Greeley, Colorado where he was the Assistant Director of Intramural and Club Sports at the University of Northern Colorado. He returned to his alma mater in 2007 as the Director of Sport Clubs. Jason currently resides in Chapel Hill with his wife, Trish, and son, Jackson. He enjoys reading, cooking, playing basketball and attending UNC athletic events.
Reggie is originally from Raleigh, NC. He graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a B.A. Degree in Exercise & Sport Science in 2001. He continued his career with UNC, receiving a M.S. Degree in Recreation Administration in 2003. Reggie is currently Director of the Student Recreation Center. He enjoys putting a smile on others' faces, and being there for the people.
Justin is a true North Carolinian, growing up in Concord, NC. He received a B.S. Degree in Biological Sciences from NC State University in 2003. After completing his degree, Justin became the Intramural Sports Intern for UNC-Chapel Hill Campus Recreation. From there he climbed the ladder, becoming the Intramural Sports Coordinator for four years, and finally the Intramural Sports Director for Campus Recreation in 2008. He enjoys exercise, food, officiating high school football and basketball, Intramural Sports, Fantasy Sports, and coupon shopping.
David was born and raised on a cattle ranch in Arizona where he grew up training horses, raising cattle and competing in rodeos around the country. In 1993 David joined the Army and served for three years training horses and performing full honor funeral ceremonies with the Caisson platoon at Arlington National Cemetery. Returning to run the family ranch for several years after his military service proved to be an obstacle in his lifelong pursuit of adventurous outdoor activities, so in 2003 he enrolled at Oklahoma State University where he earned a M.S. Degree in Recreation Administration with an emphasis in Experiential Education and adventure programming. In 2008 David accepted the position of Director of Outdoor Education for UNC-Chapel Hill where he and his dog Zip can be found working with UNC students, staff, faculty and other groups on the Carolina Outdoor Education Center Challenge Course.
Karen was born and raised in Tabernacle, NJ. She pursued a B.S. Degree in Journalism and Electronic Media from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Securing a graduate assistantship with UT's Division of RecSports, Karen received a M.S. Degree in Recreation Administration, with a minor in Sport Management. Upon completion of her graduate degree, Karen became a Special Events Coordinator at West Virginia University. She left WVU to gain experience in the private sector, working at Charles Ryan Associates, an integrated marketing communications firm, and Asayo Creative, Inc., a marketing and design firm. Missing working in a university setting, Karen moved to Chapel Hill to start her career with UNC as Director of Marketing and Special Events. Karen is currently planning a May wedding to her fiance Geoff.
Diane joined the Campus Recreation Staff as their Office Manager in August 1996 after retiring from the U.S. Navy, finishing at ROTC-UNC, with 24 years service. Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, Diane decided to stay in NC due to the milder winter weather - yeah right! She has a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree from Campbell University, 2001. Diane enjoys volunteering for U.S. Women's Open Golf tournaments, Be Active NC and the Triangle Affiliate of Susan G. Komen Foundation, as well as the United Service Organization (USO) center at RDU.
Dave graduated from North Carolina State University in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science in Parks, Recreation & Tourism Management, concentrating in Natural Resources. After a NOLS Mountaineering Course in 1993, Dave worked as a Lead Instructor for the North Carolina Outward Bound School. In 1998 Dave--hired as the Expedition Program Manager--began the Expedition Program for The Carolina Outdoor Education Center. The program has been accredited by the Association for Experiential Education since 2002. He currently resides in Johnston County with his wife, Melinda, and son, Jack.
Mike has a Degree in Music Education and Performance from the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA. Upon graduation from Berklee, Mike taught k-8 music at a public school. During a summer off, while following the Grateful Dead across the country, Mike did a one-day rock climbing course in Boulder, CO. After a day of climbing, Mike’s passion for music was put on the back burner and he pursued a life as a climber. Soon after, Mike enrolled in a year long Outdoor Leadership Program at Greenfield Community College in Greenfield, MA. Gaining experience in the industry, he started his own business--Mountain Goat Adventures, directed the Telemark Ski School in Killington, VT, and became the Assistant Director of Interlocken's International Summer Camp in Windsor, NH. Mike moved to Chapel Hill, NC to create and direct UNC’s Carolina Adventures Outdoor Education Center. Mike is currently the Indoor Climbing Coordinator.
Jordan spent the first eighteen years of his life in the small south-eastern North Carolina town of Beulaville. A Tar Heel born and bred, Jordan graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in December of 2004 with a B.A. Degree in Exercise and Sport Science.
He began working with Campus Recreation in the summer of 2002 at the SRC, and earned his first Personal Training Certification in the spring of 2003. Jordan has been a NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist since January 2005. He has been a full-time employee with Campus Rec since June 2005.
Tori graduated in May 2007 from UNC-Chapel Hill with a B.A. in Exercise & Sport Science, with a concentration in Sports Administration. Soon after, she became the Intramural Sports Intern with Carolina Campus Recreation. After Tori’s internship ended, Campus Rec hired her on full-time as the Intramural Sports Coordinator. She is currently working on a second degree, and will graduate in May 2011 from UNC-Greensboro with a M.S. in Parks & Recreation Management. She currently resides in Cary with her husband, CJ.
Joel was born in Chapel Hill, but spent most of his childhood on a small farm in Winterville, NC. He returned to Chapel Hill in 2002 to attend UNC, and shortly after secured a job with the Exercise and Sport Science Department. It was at that time Joel discovered his love for physical fitness and recreation. He spent eight years working in the Fetzer Hall Equipment Room, and officially joined the Campus Recreation staff as the Facilities and Operations Coordinator in 2010. In his free time, Joel spends time with his little girl, Chloe, and loves to be active outdoors, read and watch old movies.
