Become a Group Fitness Instructor or Personal Trainer

BECOME A GROUP FITNESS INSTRUCTOR

If you’re already nationally certified & have experience teaching…

Download and submit an application to Group Fitness Program Coordinator, Jamie Simerly.  You need a general group fitness certification to teach most classes (AFAA, ACE, NASM, etc), and a specialty certification to teach Yoga, Pilates, Indoor Cycle, or Zumba.  Once you have submitted an application, an interview and audition will be scheduled.

 

If you’re not certified and/or have no experience…

During the Fall 2012 semester, Campus Recreation offers a Fitness Instructor Training Program (non-credit).

Complete a registration form and return it to the Main Office located in the Student Rec Center. Please note: A Recreation Membership is required to partake in the FITP.

 

During the SPRING semester, you may register through the registrar when you sign up for classes (PHYA 402, titled “Leading Group Exercise”). If you have any questions, please contact Jamie Simerly.    

  • FITP is a 50 hour (20 theoretical and 30 practical) program that prepares interested students to teach safe, effective, and motivating classes. 
  • Trainees receive training on exercise instruction fundamentals including physiology, biomechanics, class format and design, and the skill of teaching.
  • Trainees will be paired with a current instructor and team teach at least once a week (for 4 to 5 weeks). 
  • Once trainees have received Fitness Instructor Training Program (FITP) Certificate of Completion, they will be eligible to interview & audition.

 

PERSONAL TRAINER TRAINING PROGRAM (PTTP)

Are you interested in becoming a personal trainer?  This program prepares teaches you how to understand and apply the basic principles of exercise training to become a personal trainer.  Trainees receive training on exercise instruction fundamentals including physiology, anatomy and program design.  

 

 

When: Mondays & Wednesdays, 4:00-5:15p
